I run to the attaining of knowledge as I enter Barnes and Noble. I find myself gravitating to the Medical Section with its anatomical diagrams and patient medical trials. I am inspired to learn more, discover more, and grow more in how the human body adapts to stimuli. I feel like I go through phases where so many questions pop into my head that I run out of room in my lined leaflet journals.
Why is the brain such a powerful tool that we still haven’t learned all its innards? What allows young people to develop social skills and communication in this highly electronic age? How do electronics change our brain chemistry? How can we create nerve grafts for individuals with paralysis? What causes cancerous tumors to develop in inoperable parts of the brain?
After all this is a good thing right? All these questions mean that my desire to deepen knowledge points to individual long term drive to become a strong leader in the medical sphere. All these questions are powerful things, that need to be ignited not stifled. Take your queries down on parchment and research with unbiased intentions to get to the bottom of the underlying topic. Remain consistent with your mind and how you cope with conflict. Ask questions all the time. Never stop. Never settle.
Ask :
Who, What, When, Where, Why and How.
Its the 6 lines that you learn in primary school as you scratch out your creative stories. These basics must follow us into our new phases of life.
Who is the demographic this disease impacts?
What does this mean for their long term likelihood and wellbeing?
When is recovery initiated by the lymphatic system of the body?
Where can we improve immunodeficiency in these individuals following radiation and chemo therapy?
Why are these individuals at risk for developing the signs and symptoms reflective of their diagnosis?
How should we introduce therapeutic intervention to help these clients fully recover from Cancer?
Questions 1-5 pointed to the diagnosis without mentioning the term. Why did I include this in my reflection? I did so to support my claim that medical doctors and health professionals need to be aware of how small details produce a big picture outlook on a patient’s diagnosis. If we remain distant from our patient during an evaluation we become a dangerous risk to the health of the individual within our care. That’s my why, even as I am still in college I know awareness to details produces a stronger outlook on life than those who live skimming over pages in their studies. Remember these things. Remain hungry. Realize the big picture. Relish in your never ending optimism.

Yes I used to hate my hair ( I would brush it when I was younger until it was a matted straight frizz gel stick texture and put a baseball cap on… I was so cute back then y’all wouldn’t believe it lol) , and today it remains a grace filled daily routine as I scrunch, moisturize, detangle , diffuse, steam, and at times embrace it’s beautiful chaos.
Especially on hard days when my hair refuses to quiet down as much as I attempt to convince it.
It’s a strong comparison to a never ending emptiness that is only filled by Christ.
But maybe we all do to God what I do to my kinky hair at times…
-We wrestle with trials simply to step back, and overlook God’s promises.
-We water down the Bible to make it comfortable for our daily lives.
-On “bad hair days,” we shove God under our hat thinking “I can control myself” as we go to college, work, plug in our music playlist, and even walk in to that party… etc.
-We act on our own.
WE THEN BECOME OUR OWN GOD.
Adam and Eve hid from the reality of their fallen nature…..
But we can only run from truth so long before it hits us in our face.
The moment we remove our hat; we see the reflection of a fallen Saint.
We hurt with a broken spirit in a hurt and broken world.
THE CREATION LACKS A CONSTANT NEED.
But the one who is the CREATOR is also a HEALER.
So return to him and no longer live in fear of tomorrow. Live under the confidence of Christ’s promises. Live free from all you are burdened from and hurt from.

Many struggle with learning how to write with proper motor control form as a child, and later on even as an adult. As I designed this exercise practice I was inspired to name it after the author J.K. Rowling. If the famous Harry Potter series wand technique quote, “Swish and Flick”.
Tools I reccomend:
-I use gel pens (Energel) to prevent excess pressure on my hand while writing. This utensil reduces stress from tight muscles as opposed to pencils and ball pens that require more leverage in the long-term.
– However you can use pencil grippers, or even use a hair tie wrapped around a pencil to increase your motor control with ball pens and pencils.
Step 1.The key is you must maintain a wand holding stance and flip it up.
Just imagine that you are Harry Potter it is all about visualization!!! Or if you are a Jedi me like me a Star wars lightsaber stance!
Practice drawing a heart in the air with your wand motor form, and maybe even the Disney Channel symbol. (Just for giggles, but definitely make it fun!)
✩ In between step:
The rock back is all about transition to your writing form. Many forget that motor control is an exercise with repetitions daily practiced. First secure that balance in your rock -back, so it is comfortable and firm yet without tension.
Then you can go on to Step 2:
Get a GRIP on it!
Adjust your index finger towards the front on the pencil supported with your thumb underneath.
Steps for this to go great :
-no tightness, stiffness, or cramping while writing. If you feel it, you got to deal with it.
A. First roll out your wrist in circles to loosen up your muscles in fine motor control.
B. Putty, Slime, squish balls galore! Strengthen your muscles overtime with practice.
C. Take breaks when it cramps up y’all!
Just as mental breaks are key to improving your understanding of a topic; the same thing applies to your fine motor movements of your hand. Be kind to yourself in the process!!!

How is chocolate produced? What is considered the healthiest chocolate?
Chocolate is ancient as it dates back to 2000 B.C. when the Mayans of Central America were the first chocolate brewers who drank it as a bitter fermented concoction paired with spices or wines.
Today chocolate bars begin as a cacao pod (Fig. 1) which is larger than the circumference of your hand.

The seeds (aka beans) are extracted from the pod, fermented, dried, and roasted into cocoa beans. (Fig.2)

These cocoa beans are shelled so that the meat or cocoa nibs (Fig. 3) is separate from the outer layer.

These nibs are then ground into a solution called chocolate liquor and then the liquid is filtered from the fatty portion or as some call cocoa butter (Fig. 4) which is used in many hair and beauty products.

The remnant liquor is refined to fabricate into solidified chocolate that we consume today. The outer shell that is separated from the nibs is used for baking or beverages.
*Recommended Serving* = 1 ounce or 2 dark chocolate squares per day.
The darker the chocolate, the more cocoa is in it, and the more bitter it will be. However the darker the chocolate the better it is for your overall health outcomes.
What is Chocolate Composed of?
-Dark Chocolate: 50-90% cocoa solids, cocoa butter, and sugar.
-Milk Chocolate: 10-50% cocoa solids, cocoa butter, and one of the varieties of sugar.
-Lower quality chocolates may add butter fat, vegetable oils, or artificial colors or flavors.
*White Chocolate: excludes any cocoa solids and is made simply of cocoa butter, sugar, and milk.*
Chocolate is Vastly Rich in:
Iron– important in production of hemoglobin.
Copper– helps produce hemoglobin, maintain neurons, and the immune system. Assists in the formation of collagen, the absorption of iron, and assists in ATP production.
Magnesium– assists in biochemical reactions, helps care for the nervous system, and muscular function, enhances the immune system, maintains the rigidity of the skeletal system, monitors a steady heart beat, regulates A1C levels, and aids in the production of ATP and protein.
Zinc– immune responses to viruses and bacteria, cellular production of proteins and DNA, critical for proper wound healing and for appropriate sensory input of taste and smell.
Phosphorus– assists calcium in skeletal production of bones, structural emphasis for nucleic acids and cell membranes, ATP production role. (Your body absorbs less phosphorus when calcium levels are too high, and vice versa= they balance each other out)
Flavanols– metabolites with antioxidant benefits reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma, and stroke.
CRAVINGS: –Both Women and Men crave for chocolate as a result of a drop in Blood sugar; furthermore, the sugar within the chocolate temporarily provides the body with ATP.
Why do women crave chocolate prior to menstruation?
-mood swings
-fatigue
-irritability
-shakiness
-7 days prior to menstruation women experience a drop in serotonin and low blood sugar drops (especially in between meals).
How does chocolate affect the brain?
Chocolate releases neurotransmitters (“brain signals”) that affect endorphin levels.
Endorphins= Your happy Chemicals 😃= lessen pain and decreases stress.
+ High amounts of Endorphins= produce a sense of euphoria both emotionally and physically.
– Low Amounts of Endorphins= indicative of those in pain or anxious state of mind.

Causes changes in blood pressure and blood sugar levels= Leading to feelings of excitement and alertness.
Acts as mood increaser and a decreases depression when combined with dopamine (this does not result in the same addiction as dopamine).

The following diagrams below illustrate several studies that investigated the beneficial uses of chocolate for the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, digestive and how chocolate decreases obesity. I found it fascinating that our body can block inflammatory responses that take place. I was extremely shocked that chocolate actually decreases the need to consume food as the view of chocolate is that it can contribute to weight gain. In the case of neural connections our brain has the ability to stimulate an increased proportion of synapses with the stimulus of chocolate acting on our nervous system. Dark chocolate is extremely high in flavanols, which are antioxidants that can improve blood flow and lessen buildup of bad cholesterol.
B.) The effects of coca-enriched diet on human microbiota. Cocoa diet modifies the intestinal microbiota, thus leading to a tolerogenic pathway with release of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-10. This assists in fighting a variety of respiratory pathologies that produce an inflammatory reaction.

Dark chocolate can have a stabilizing effect on blood sugar levels (A1C Levels) because it is low on the glycemic index.

A research double blind study of 84 young volunteers evaluated the manipulation of genetic coding in buccal epithelial cells by flavonoids from cocoa in dark chocolate showed to significantly prevent DNA damage and improved the rigidity of the cellular nucleus. The biochemical parameters (total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol level in blood) and anthropometrical parameters (waist measurement) utilized within the test showed a significant improvement following 6 months of daily intake of 2g of dark chocolate with 70% Cocoa. In essence the progress seen in the biochemical parameters of lipid and glucose metabolism could be related to the antioxidants within dark chocolate that decreased cellular stressors that increase the chances of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, obesity, and diabetes.

Cocoa contains more phenolic antioxidants than most foods due to epicatechin which is one of many Flavonoids over antioxidant activity. Flavonoids are pigments commonly seen in a variety of plants, but are also seen in chocolate. The epicatechin in chocolate supports the vascular endothelium and as a result influences both acute and chronic maintenance of the nitric oxide production.
Additional Cardiovascular effects are seen via anti inflammatory conditions within cocoa polyphenols and is seen by the activity of NF-κB. These antioxidant effects of cocoa may directly influence insulin resistance and as a result reduces the risk for diabetes. In other words Cocoa can stimulate alterations via redox sensitive signaling pathways over gene expression and immune response.
Within the Nervous System and Integumentary System:
The role of cocoa goes beyond inflammation and is seen to play a protective role within our nervous system and integumentary system. Cocoa also plays a protective role within the nervous system by protecting the nerves from injury and inflammation. The Integumentary System is assisted by cocoa as it protects the dermis from UV damage. This is critical for athletes to recognize due to their risk for musculoskeletal injuries that are directly interrelated with the nervous system and the risk of skin cancer as a byproduct of overexposure to the sun’s rays.
In addition Cocoa is seen to increase satiety, cognitive function, and mood which is related to the Nervous and Endocrine Systems which govern hormones.
Moderation of chocolate is still highly encouraged due to overconsumption producing an increased risk of obesity but for the most part the benefits of moderate cocoa or dark chocolate consumption likely outweigh the risks.
4.Food-related behaviors among individuals with overweight/obesity and normal body weight

However in some cases chocolate is seen as an emotional eating coping mechanism for social anxiety or depression in both normal and obese individuals. The presented results show that among people with varied BMI categories, emotional eating is connected to craving chocolate and avoidance of social situations related to food and body exposure that plays only the role of mediation. Initiate Learning: The human body is complex so don’t settle for taking a class and assume you know everything about it. Desire to learn more and grow beyond strictly being a student achieving a degree. In the long run that is what education is preparing you to be, an initiator, self starter, leader, researcher, detective and medical professional.
Inquire More: Ask questions, remain active through the expansion of learning new concepts and broaden your horizons. First it shows your Professors/Mentors that you are humble and teachable as a new individual entering the field. Second it allows you to engage actively in the material, develop critical thinking skills, and become self confident in your own passion!!!
Ignite your Why: As undergraduates the phrase is “oh this is just general education, so why try,” …. well is it really?? If this is irrelevant to your future then how do you expect to see long term progress from this basic level. You must be a beginner in order to become a novice and then later on a PHD. Every teacher was once taught by someone as knowledge is power, and when wielded is the strongest strategical base of support for your platform. “Start from the bottom, and you go 0 to 100 real quick.” (@Drake Reference)
